Bio-Individuality: Your Physiology Does Not Care About Your Philosophy

Why you need a bio-individual approach to your nutrition plan

I wanted to go deeper on bio-individuality & why it’s essential to understand your own personal individual chemistry, as well as how to create a straightforward experience with food that optimizes & truly elongates your health - without deprivation.

I think we can all agree that we’ve grown up around a “diet culture” where everyone is confused about what foods they should be eating & essentially just yo-yo dieting through different food combining resources.

I work with clients all the time who have tried all the diets: keto, pro-metabolic, Atkins, Whole30, weight watchers, intermittent fasting, vegetarian, carnivore - the list goes on and on- yet everyone is still confused about what foods they need to be eating to feel good & are not getting long term, health building results.

What is happening with this cycle of trial & error and how do we know what works best for us once & for all?!

The truth is that you are your own unique individual person with unique makeup that makes you, well, YOU!

Following the same nutrition plan as your neighbor, cousin, or favorite influencer on social media could possibly be the exact opposite of what your body requires! We truly need a bio-individual approach when it comes to our nutrition.

“Bio-individuality means there is not a one-size-fits-all diet, each person is a unique individual with highly individualized nutritional requirements.”

You have a certain & unique set of homeostatic controls that operate your metabolism & cells, as well as unique deficiencies that should be considered when crafting your nutrition habits. Some of these metabolic controls are:

  • genetics & ancestral geographical history

  • epigenetics

  • oxidative rate

  • autonomic nervous system balance

  • endocrine system

  • methylation status

    & more

Bio-Individuality is exactly why 3 people can try the same diet & 1 person feels great & loses weight, the 2nd feels no difference at all & the 3rd gains weight & feels worse!

Some people do better with consuming starchy foods & some people do better with processing fruit sugars.

Some people do great with larger breakfasts & smaller dinners & others do best with larger dinners & smaller breakfasts.

Some people thrive on higher purine proteins like beef organs & red meat, while others feel best on lighter purine proteins like white meat chicken & fish.

To say that there is a single way we all should be eating just doesn’t make sense. For instance, the Inuits in the Arctic thrive on higher fat & lower carb eating because that is native to their land & what gives them optimal fuel. On the other hand, Islanders near the equator thrive on higher carbs & lighter proteins because that is what is native to their land & what is plentiful around them in that location.

There are SO many ways to customize your nutrition & instead of that being overwhelming, let that excite you that there is a way to make sure you know how to thrive & feel your best long term!
